How Old Should Seedlings be Before Using Nutrients

Nutrients, whether natural or added, are very important to plants and their growth. One question we are often asked is, “At what stage in a plant’s growth should I add nutrients?”. Although this seems like a simple question, it can be much more complex and nutrition needs vary plant to plant.

Generally, however, seedlings do not typically need nutrients until they begin true leaf growth. This is because seeds contain the necessary nutrients for plants during the beginning stages of growth (germination).

Additionally it may be wise to test the soil you are growing in to make sure it is nutrient-rich enough for the seeds you are planting. Remember – the three most important nutrients your plant needs are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

After you see the second set of leaves begin to grow (true leaves) you can start providing your plants essential nutrients, roughly once a week. Just be sure to dilute these nutrients during the first few weeks as your plants become accustomed to this additive.

Keep an eye on your plants, they can provide great indicators of their health if you know what to look for. For example if you notice yellowing of the leaves, wilting, or stunted growth – this can be a sign that your plants are receiving excessive amounts of nutrients.

This should help get you started! Be sure to research more on the specific plants you are working with to better understand the nutrients they will need.
