Why Vertical Farming is the Way Forward

Vertical farming is, you guessed it – farming on vertical surfaces. As opposed to traditional (horizontal) farming, vertical farming allows for exponential use of the area you are growing your crops. This may include warehouses, shipping containers or even skyscrapers. Farming “up” utilizes a growing area’s length and width, but plants can also be stacked upwards to get the most out of the space you’re using to grow!

Vertical farms are typically housed indoors because it is important to have complete control over the crops’ temperature, humidity, and light. Since plants are grown at different heights it is crucial to artificially regulate all of the elements each plant needs to thrive.

The biggest benefit of Vertical Farming is to optimize space and crop yield. Many large operations may use stacked towers with hydroponic systems, but you can easily start a vertical garden at home by using pallets with extended shelves from the slats!
